SAT Feb 16 - The Problem With Selfishness

WHEN:
SATURDAY, February 16, 2013 7:00 PM Arrival Time

TOPIC:
The Problem With Selfishness
Video of talk by Marsha Enright at 2012 Atlas Society Conference

DESCRIPTION:
In her book, The Virtue of Selfishness, Ayn Rand exhorted readers to put the word “selfishness” to its true and proper use: to describe the ethic of rational self-interest. Fifty-one years later, it’s still an uphill battle to get others to accept this use of “selfishness.” Education pioneer and author Marsha Familaro Enright examines the semantic, conceptual and cultural problems with following her admonition and suggests alternatives.

SPEAKER:
Bill Perry

DESCRIPTION:
Bill Perry will summarize Rand’s views on death, Pascal’s wager, and some of the views of the stoics on the subject.  He will also discuss homicide and suicide.  Despite the grim sounding title, the point of the talk is that since there isn’t any afterlife you must make the most of your one precious life.  We will watch the portion of Rand’s interview with Tom Snyder where she discussed the issue.

SAT Dec 15 - Solstice Party and Gift Exchange

Jackie & Lyman Hazelton are hosting the annual Arizona Objectivists’ Solstice Party at their home on  Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 6 PM.  Note earlier start time.

DINNER:
The traditional Pizza ordered out for $5 per person. There will also be holiday sweets for dessert and non-alcoholic beverages. If  you have special dietary needs or would prefer an alcoholic beverage, please feel free to bring what you require or desire, for yourself or to share.

GIFT EXCHANGE:
We will play a present guessing game to sharpen our logical reasoning skills and get to know each other better. Please bring a wrapped gift worth $20 or more which represents something about yourself (but of course should be an object that someone else might like). Before entering, place the gift  in a brown paper bag (at the door) and then give it to Lyman to be put in the guest room. After dinner, we will draw numbers and begin the present selection and analysis. Each gift will be opened, written down on your list and analyzed.  Once all gifts are opened, you must finalize your guess at who gave each gift.  Starting with the
first gift,  the real giver reveals himself/herself and explains the gift selection.  Why, for example, he gave the CD and a potato perched on a styrofoam couch. The person who gets the most correct gets an additional gift from Jackie.  Ayn Rand’s Collective  played this type of game at Christmas time. If you prefer not to bring a gift, you can forego participation in the exchange but may still assist in the guessing.

SAT Nov 17 - From Dictatorship to Democracy

WHEN:
SATURDAY, November 17, 2012 7:00 PM Arrival Time

TOPIC:
From Dictatorship to Democracy paperback by Gene Sharp
Video of Bruce Bueno de Mesquita speaking on Iran’s Future
http://www.ted.com/talks/bruce_bueno_de_mesquita_predicts_iran_s_future.html

DISCUSSION LEADER:
Jackie Hazelton

DESCRIPTION:
It is not necessary to read the book to attend but you are encouraged to do so.  Jackie will summarize the book and lead the discussion.

The New York Times had this to say:
‘Halfway around the world from Tahrir Square in Cairo, an aging American intellectual shuffles about his cluttered brick row house in a working-class neighborhood.  His name is Gene Sharp.  Stoop-shouldered and white-haired at eighty-three, he grows orchids, has yet to master the Internet and hardly seems like a dangerous man.

Few Americans have heard of Dr. Sharp.  But for decades, his practical writings on non-violent revolution - most notably From Dictatorship to Democracy, a guide to toppling autocrats, available in more than thirty languages - have inspired dissidents around the world, including in Burma, Bosnia, Estonia, and Zimbabwe, and now in Tunisia and Egypt.

When Egypt’s April 6 Youth Movement was struggling to recover from a failed effort in 2005, its leaders tossed around ‘crazy ideas’ about bringing down the government, said Ahmed Maher, a leading strategist.  They stumbled on Dr. Sharp while examining the Serbian movement Otpor, which he had influenced.

Dr. Sharp, hard-nosed yet exceedingly shy, is careful not to take credit.  He is more thinker than revolutionary.  While seeing the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak as a sign of “encouragement,” Dr. Sharp said, “The people of Egypt did that - not me.”

In the audio, Ryan speaks for about 8 minutes on Rand’s ideas and “personalizing” social security.  He then answers questions.  We will break with our tradition of NOT discussing politics to consider Ryan since he appears to be influenced by Rand.  What should Objectivists think of Ryan?

SATURDAY, June 16, 2012 7:00 PM Arrival Time

TOPIC:
Objectivism’s View of Competition
Trial Run of Talk for the Atlas Summit 2012
By Jackie Hazelton
Please attend if you can to give me your feedback so I don’t embarrass myself.  If you can’t attend but would like to review the talk, let me know and I will email you a copy.

ABSTRACT:
What is competition?  Rand did not provide us with a definition.  However, Rand had very definite ideas about what competition was and wasn’t.  In this talk, Jackie Hazelton will paint a picture of Rand’s view of competition based on her writings, and then analyze how Rand’s view agrees or disagrees with the commonly understood notion of competition.

READING:
Rand’s writing on competition is scattered throughout her writings.  The most applicable essay is
“The ‘Conflicts’ of Men’s Interests” from
The Virtue of Selfishness
