Flourishing: The New and Evolving Science of Happiness
2008 The Atlas Society Summer Seminar Presentation by
Joe Duarte
We will listen to the CD.

Ayn Rand described happiness as man’s highest moral purpose. This talk
outlines the state of happiness science. How is happiness defined and
measured? How do scientists treat the role of values? Duarte journeys
through all the recent major findings of happiness research–causes and
correlates of happiness, curtural differences, and philosophical
implications. Finally, does Objectivism make up happier? How do values
impact our well-being?

Joe Duarte, a former member of Arizona Objectivists, is pursuing a doctorate
in Social Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His
research focuses on authentic happiness, mindfulness, and the sublime
positive emotions, and he will incorporate neuroscientific methods in
investigating these areas. Previously, Joe enjoyed a career in the software
industry as a quality expert. He holds a B.S. in Psychology from Arizona
State University, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2007.
